Ep. 52: Tessa Jennison - Adventure Racing for Humanity
Tuesday Mar 16, 2021
Tuesday Mar 16, 2021
We often pursue sports to fulfill some inner drive and goals. Very rarely does our individual pursuit extend beyond our own personal satisfaction. The world doesn't change because we set a personal record.
But when you take your passion for testing yourself and mate it with a cause, you can make a difference. Tessa Jennison joins us to talk about her adventure racing endeavors and how that lead to her current passion - community based endurance events that benefit the community.
From local adventure races to the televised Eco-Challenge in Fiji, Tessa has constantly pushed herself to find out what her limits were.
This led her to have the idea of a 1-day 65km trek across the whole of Waterloo region in the winter to bring attention to the plight of the homeless who have to live in those conditions. A one-off personal test, led to creating an annual event that merges physical challenge with activism. The Waterloo Region Crossing was born and now anyone can join to test themselves, as well help raise money and awareness for The Working Centre in Kitchener, Ontario.
Give a listen to get ideas on how you be part even if you don't live in our area.

Wednesday Nov 25, 2020
Wednesday Nov 25, 2020
We can complain about how things aren't like they used to be or we can adapt to the challenge and find new things to do. This episode we talk about how to make this winter a fun adventure even though it will mean that many of us have to do things differently.
We talk about embracing outdoor winter sports as they are fun and inherently socially distant. From snowshoeing and cross country skiing to ice climbing and winter camping, don't let Covid keep you from having a great season. We also hit upon some tips to help with the
winter blues and keep on top of your mental health.
While it means having to wear long pants, we've learned to love the challenges that winter brings. Give a listen and find a new winter passion of your own.

Ep. 42 - Outdoors for Newbies
Thursday Sep 17, 2020
Thursday Sep 17, 2020
A side effect of Covid has been a dramatic increase in new outdoors people. When you aren't allowed to travel and do your usual summer activities it is natural that people will head outside where it is easy to social distance. With this influx of new outdoor users come a number of new challenges. In this episode we aim to help educate people on principles of Leave No Trace, animal issues and how to poop in the woods. No one is born knowing how to behave in the outdoors so give a listen and learn how to be a good steward of our wild places.

Ep. 37: Backcountry With Kids
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
Has having kids slowed down your adventures into the backcountry? It doesn't have to. Give a listen as Catharine gives her advice on how to get your kids into the backcountry. From trip planning to lowering your expectations, she has built her experience by taking her kids starting at the ages of 3 and 4 on backpacking trips here in Ontario and in the USA in the Adirondack Mountains and Allegheny National Forest.
Experiencing the backcountry together is a great thing to share and will help your kids develop a whole new set of skills that will help them for the rest of their lives.
And remember right now your kids are probably slower than you but in a few years you'll have to train to keep up.
